This title has multiple meanings this week. First and most importantly Kerry Rose is in a lot of pain right now, as she’s in labor w/ she and Calvin’s first kid. Let’s all hope it goes well for them, hopefully there aren’t too many hours left in their joyful ordeal. We’ll have the privilege of meeting the kid in a few weeks when we take our big Tampa Train Trip 2012. I’m calling the child’s name here first: Bruce. Put your money on it.
The other reason for the post title is the end of the school year for the class of 2015 here at UPenn. Wednesday evening was the deadline for moving out of campus housing- graduation is next week for the seniors. Move Out is a big deal as there are 1400 people trying to get out of here over several days. There are mountains of garbage piled along the walks as students realize they have no way to move all their stuff, or to store it, or that their possessions have gone out of style over the past 9 months, and won’t be needed in the fall. Many things are donated to Penn Moves- which is a collection of usable goods that Penn later sells at a giant flea market-like event, to benefit Goodwill. But thousands of items still get trashed nonetheless. The other night I took Ella out for her evening walk, and took a bit too long getting back, prompting Molly to text “R U out digging through trash?” Yes I was, though it was more like poking, not digging. We scored a full-size Yamaha keyboard with adjustable stand for Silas (it works perfectly) and other things too extensive to list. I am the proud owner of a Japanese Kendo fighting suit though, which is righteous.
Wednesday after the move-out deadline all the staff did room-checks and collected the recycling bins from each room. It was quite a task (although I basically just watched.) Silas was more helpful than I, helping to inspect recycling bins and stack them in piles. That evening we had a nice end-of-year picnic out in the courtyard. The graduating seniors are taking off to all corners of the map, so there’s a little sadness in that.
Jeremy and Ayanna are still getting used to parenthood, and Kamea is indeed a total baby, beating up on her parents by selfishly insisting that her needs be met. They are a tired couple of new parents. I’ve got a pile of ingredients on the kitchen counter which I need to turn into a soup for them. I’m not sure when that’s going to happen. Silas is due to wake up soon, and cooking with Silas is not that fun. I tried to eat a bowl of soup earlier this afternoon and he clambered up my legs and it tipped both down his chest and into my crotch. Neither of us were happy, but fortunately it was just somewhat hot, and aside from the shock did not harm to us.
Silas is due to wake up soon, so here are the photos, and one last time all our best wishes to the new and due parents out there, fighting the good fight.
Hooray, a keyboard! Hope he loves it. Good luck to Kerry and Calvin!
Love the pics, gosh Silas is looking so grown up ! The move out stuff is over the top to be sure…glad some of it is collected and re sold. My love to all
I just noticed on the keyboard photo that his “playing” fingers are trained in the ipad position!
